Do not authorize payment for any portion of expenses for proper disposition of a person’s remains when one of the following occurs:
• The total cost of proper disposition exceeds $1,500.
• The deceased person has a prepaid burial contract, regardless of the amount of the contract. This includes contracts where life insurance is used as payment and the funeral director is the beneficiary.
• The total cost of proper disposition is covered by:
- the deceased’s personal property resources, or
- other burial funds.
• The total cost of proper disposition is covered by contributions or death benefits. Organizations that offer death benefits include the:
- Social Security Administration (SSA),
- Veteran’s Administration (VA), and
- Railroad Retirement Board (RRB).
