STANDARD OF NEED
The Standard of Need (SON) is equal to the Basic Maintenance Needs Allowance (BMNA) plus actual shelter costs, if incurred, up to the maximum of $342, the weighted average of the maximum shelter payment allowances, as shown below:
Household Size |
BMNA |
Maximum SON (BMNA + max shelter payment allowance of $342) |
1 |
$1,462 |
$1,804 |
2 |
$2,859 |
$3,201 |
3 |
$3,825 |
$4,167 |
4 |
$4,678 |
$5,020 |
5 |
$5,465 |
$5,807 |
6 |
$5,801 |
$6,143 |
7 |
$6,138 |
$6,480 |
8 |
$6,475 |
$6,817 |
9 |

$7,491 |
11 |
$7,486 |
$7,828 |
12 |
$7,825 |
$8,167 |
For household sizes over 12, calculate the BMNA by adding $302 for each additional person. Multiply that figure by 2.4%. Add that figure to the original BMNA figure you calculated for the HH size that was over 12 and then round down to the nearest whole dollar.
To obtain the SON for HH sizes over 12, calculate the BMNA per the above paragraph, and add actual shelter costs, if incurred, up to the maximum of $342, the weighted average of the maximum shelter payment allowances.
