The Standard of Need (SON) is equal to the Basic Maintenance Needs Allowance (BMNA) plus the applicable maximum shelter allowance for subsidized or unsubsidized housing as shown below: |

For household sizes over 12, calculate the BMNA by adding $67 for each additional person to the basic maintenance payment allowance (See FAM Part 601, Table B) and divide the result by 0.1447. To then obtain the SON, add the maximum shelter allowance of:
• $293 to the BMNA figure when the individual resides in subsidized housing; or
• $318 to the BMNA figure when the individual resides in unsubsidized housing.
