STANDARD OF NEED

The Standard of Need (SON) is equal to the Basic Maintenance Needs Allowance (BMNA) plus $310, the weighted average of the maximum shelter payment allowances, as shown below:

For household sizes over 12, calculate the BMNA by adding $67 for each additional person to the basic maintenance payment allowance (See FAM Part 601, Table B) and divide the result by 0.1351. To obtain the SON, take the BMNA and add $310, the weighted average of the maximum shelter payment allowances.
